World No Tobacco Day 2025: Unmasking the Appeal
31 May is World No Tobacco Day. This year, the World Health Organization and public health organisations from across the globe come together to highlight how tobacco and nicotine industries use carefully engineered products and deceptive tactics to make their harmful products seem more appealing, especially to young people.
Nicotine and tobacco products are highly addictive. Additives mask the harshness of tobacco, making it easier to start and harder to quit.
Manipulative product designs, attractive flavours, and glamourised marketing, make products appear more attractive and less dangerous.
Whether it’s cigarettes, vapes, nicotine pouches or heated tobacco products, these tactics employed by the industry exploit our youth, creating addiction to nicotine products for profit.
Removing the appeal of these products through stricter regulations, such as those that come into effect in Australia on July 1, is essential to protecting current and future generations from harm.
